About Allis families
Hello and thanks for visiting.
If you have an interest in families by the name of Allis, Alliss, Alles or similar spelling then please get in contact, I will be very pleased to hear from you.
I now have a new web-site with open-access at allis.one-name.net - click on the link on the left.

This latest version (September 2020) adds several new people in the old tree, some corrections and adds a family from the United States. The Mansfield Allis family has also been aded with thanks to Mike Pipe
It has been noticed that some of the source information has not transferred well so if more detail is needed please get in touch.

The Allis, Alliss, Allice and other related names are not that common. In 2002 for England 267 Allis names were recorded and a further 110 for Alliss.
The 1881 census for England and Wales records that there were 201 people with the Allis spelling, 6 with Allise, 50 with Alliss, 32 with Allice, and 7 with Alyss.

There are also families in Ireland, Scotland and the Channel Islands. In Scotland the Alles or Allice spellings appear to have been most popular, but there were also many crossovers to Ellis (and similar) and back again.

A survey of surnames in the USA for the year 2000 records 1,234 Allis and 159 Alliss.

It is believed that the name originated in Normandy, France.

I am interested in Allis families from all over and have registered it as a one-name study. This came about from trying to tie some loose ends together which resulted in looking at various apparently unrelated families in Lincolnshire for possible links.

My family is from Nettleham, Lincolnshire in England which can be traced there to 1523 at the earliest so far (though sadly with some gaps in the documented line) but there are other Allis families in the same county who were not obviously connected, but some connections have now been made bringing them back to Nettleham. This research has been written up in book form, "An account of the Allis families of Lincolnshire"

The family name in England is first seen in 1086 in Domesday book but this family is believed to have died out by the 1300s. There were a smattering of apparently unconnected families over a wide area of England who appear in various documents through the medieval and early modern period. Some are newly arrived such as a family in Dorset in 1540 who were Norman and had lived in England for 20 years.

In looking to the USA it is said that many of the Allis families there could be related to one William Allis from Essex in England who sailed to America about 1630. The origins of William were not known or recorded at the time but his descendants are listed in a well-known genealogy (The Genealogy of William Allis of Hatfield, Massachusetts by Horatio D. Allis published about 1920).

A work-in-progress is to try and identify this William. A number of parish registers have been looked at for parishes in Essex that have not been transcribed by the LDS but suitable candidates for this William have not been found so far.

Given the doubt over a common source of the family this would be an excellent DNA project and I have Y-DNA results at FTDNA to compare with.

The trees on this site are mostly from England and Wales at present although some of the Lincolnshire families have spread out to Massachusetts, Colorado and Nebraska in the US, as well as New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

The individual family trees are from families originating in:
1. Nettleham, Lincolnshire and from there to other parts of Lincolnshire, Middlesex and Northumberland and other areas
 2. Cowbit, Lincolnshire and others from the south of the county (Midville etc.)
3. South Wales and Birmingham (from John Allis of Germany c1834-1925- there is some doubt over his age)
4. Kent
5. Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire (and origins in Hertfordshire and London)
6. Loughton, Essex
7. From the Bridgwater area of Somerset (originated from an Ellis family from Devon)
8. Various unconnected (at the moment) families from different parts of London
9. Scotland
10. India
11. United States
12. Mansfield-Alliss from London

These represent a majority of the families in England and Wales, and some in Scotland. Ireland and the Channel Islands have still to be researched and will be added in due course.

If you have any further information or would like to know more then please get in contact. Record finding is a work in progress and mistakes may creep in (but of course we hope not). If you see anything that needs putting right please let me know.

I hope you find this work of interest.
This tree is generated from "The Master Genealogist" on my computer, and should not have any living people included.

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
